These tanks have to be replaced from time to time because they have limited lifespans. Drivers of forklifts must use care when handling propane tanks. Compressed gases are very hazardous, especially since the gas is flammable. Use care when removing and replacing propane tank to prevent being injured.
1 If there is a need to replace the propane tank, the first step is to stop the forklift, then turn the tank valve off. The forklift must be left on until the engine dies. This procedure burns the gas off in the transfer hose which connects the tank and the engine. Prior to taking the next steps, wear the correct safety equipment, like insulated gloves made of either neoprene or leather. It is essential for you to protect your skin from touching the compressed gas, that is extremely cold.
2 The tank hose needs to be disconnected, followed by removing the tank from its holding straps. When you put in a new tank, tighten the nut to reconnect the holding straps and to reattach the hose at the valve of the tank.
3 Leaks could be inspected just by applying soapy water to the valve and opening it slightly. If there is a leak, it would cause bubbles to foam from around the valve. If this occurs, check the connection hose at the nut and the valve area. Re-tighten the connecting nut if you detect any leaks in the valve area, and then perform the leak inspection process all over again. Persistent leaks mean that both the nut and connecting hose must be replaced. Nonetheless, if replacing the nut and hose still does not stop the leak, the tank must be replaced.
4 Open the valve all the way to allow the gas to fill the connecting hose. Then you can start the forklift and resume working.
